From Uncertainty to Stability: A Veteran Family Finds a New Beginning
When an Army veteran and her 4-year-old daughter were facing imminent homelessness, they were sleeping on a relative’s floor with nowhere to go next. With time running out, they needed urgent support, including housing, food, and behavioral health services.
That’s when Regional Coordinator James Custodio stepped in.
Through coordinated efforts, the family was quickly connected to critical resources, including behavioral health support, local food assistance, and multiple housing programs. When they were forced to leave their temporary living situation, a partner organization provided a short-term hotel stay, ensuring they had a safe place to sleep.
As housing options progressed, a gap remained before their move-in date. With support from the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation, that gap was bridged, covering a final hotel stay so the family never had to spend a night without shelter.
Just days later, everything changed.
The veteran was approved for rapid re-housing assistance, securing a new home in Richmond, with her first month’s rent and security deposit covered. Today, she and her daughter are safely settled, and she is connected to ongoing behavioral health services for continued support.
This is what coordinated care and community partnership can do, turning moments of crisis into lasting stability.
